Package Description:
This program offers 16 & 17 year olds an opportunity to canoe one of the spectacular routes up to James Bay. The Missinaibi, Harricana, Kassagami, and Hannah Bay Rivers are all among the yearly candidates for this adventure. Chosen for their rugged beauty, these rivers make their way through the Canadian Shield to the Hudson Bay lowlands. Each of these engaging rivers changes character, speed, and frame of mind as they rush and wind down to the salt water bay. As trippers get closer to the Bay tides, brackish water, distant horizons, and enormous skies help define these rivers and give participants a sense of the power of nature.
Covering an average distance of 500 km, the journeys north from Missinaibi, Val D'Or, or Parent, have some very remote sections. All of these rivers offer beautiful scenery, historic significance, challenging whitewater, and a vast northern sky.
When the rivers drop off the Canadian shield the result is a series of waterfalls that marvel the fortunate onlooker. The group will rest for a day at these falls. Along the way we'll also see Hudson's Bay Company outposts, thousands year old campsites, and ancient pictographs. Moose and otter are a familiar and friendly sight, and whispering northern lights dance throughout the night sky.
The Coureurs de Bois trip ends at Moosonee, where we travel out onto James Bay and tour around Moose Factory, sign the canoeists registry, and take the Little Bear train back to where southern roads begin.
