Package Description:
Let us introduce you to sea kayaking and camping on majestic Lake Superior, the largest freshwater sea! This fully guided & outfitted excursion is designed for new to intermediate paddlers, and includes a half-day of sea kayak instruction based from our lodge on Lake Superior.
On this sea kayak weekend getaway on Lake Superior you will see landscapes carved from 10,000 years of wind, water and time, deep green boreal forests with rare Arctic disjunct plants and possibly a wide variety of wildlife including moose, fox, beaver and otters.
The trip begins and ends from our Rock Island Lodge site located on Lake Superior adjacent the protected waters at the mouth of the Michipicoten River.
On Friday afternoon, we have a group instruction session designed for novice and aspiring intermediate paddlers. Skills include wet exits, forward/reverse strokes, turning strokes and basic bracing skills. Group paddling, safety and rescue skills are also covered.
On Friday evening, we enjoy a delicious fresh fish BBQ served from our lodge overlooking Lake Superior's Michipicoten Bay. Following dinner and a group trip orientation presentation, we camp out on our beach in tents or our tipi. Alternatively, at an additional charge, you can enjoy our lodge accommodations.
On Saturday morning following breakfast we take a quick shuttle to Old Woman Bay in Lake Superior Provincial Park where our sea kayak trip begins. During this weekend getaway we sea kayak about 25 km following the more remote northern section of Lake Superior Park and finish at Naturally Superior Adventures, Rock Island Lodge mid Sunday afternoon.
If the lake is rough, your guide will select alternative sea kayaking routes in Lake Superior Park including Mijin Lake, Gargantua Harbor or Sinclair Cove. Lake Superior is mostly calm in summer, but when it gets rough, we enjoy the view from shore, so experience paddling in surf and big swells is not necessary.
You guide(s) have advanced wilderness first aid, sea kayak paddling and sea kayak guide course certifications. Safety is their primary concern. They know and love Lake Superior and want to share their knowledge with you. They are wonderful wilderness chefs and "on trip" meals are healthy, fresh and delicious (no freeze dried stuff here!)
On this trip we provide, professional instruction and guiding, all meals Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, tents (double or single occupancy), sleeping pads, group safety equipment, sanitation supplies, cooking and eating utensils.
Sea Kayaks are expedition style fully equipped to coast guard standards. We also provide dry bags, Farmer John/Jane wetsuits and paddling jackets.
All you need to bring is personal clothing, a sleeping bag and a sense of adventure. A complete trip list is provided when you register.
This weekend getaway is a great introduction to sea kayaking and camping on Lake Superior. It's designed for adults over 16. We also do custom trips for groups of all sizes and almost all ages and run a family focused long weekend getaway during the August long weekend.
