Package Description:
Sea kayak the wilderness coast of Lake Superior for an adventure tour of a lifetime! Gargantua in Lake Superior Provincial Park is a mythical place of the Ojibway; the landscape is replete with mystery and native heritage sites, such as Devil's Chair and Devil's Warehouse Island.

We paddle above the eerie glow of massive boulders in the deep clear water, while passing ancient lava and crystal clear streams. Moose and caribou occasionally wander by the solitary beaches.

As this area is relatively sheltered, the sea kayak tour is ideal for the novice sea kayaker. The first half day of our adventure trip will be spent on sea kayak lessons, so prepare to get wet!

Deduct $20 CDN/day for those who supply own fully equipped kayak; group discounts (> 5 persons) are %15.

Airport pickup and return from Sault Ste. Marie (depending on van availability) is $150 (return) per group/trip, cost will be pro-rated per individual), but please call ahead to confirm!

Trip Itinerary: 5 days, 50 km (30 miles)

The Voyageur Lodge on Batchwana Bay is 60 km (36 miles) north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (call 1-705-882-2504 to reserve evening prior to trip). For those who prefer to camp the evening prior to the trip, Pancake Bay Provincial Park is just 5 km north of the lodge (call 1-705-882-2209, after May 1, or go directly to the OntarioParks.ca web-site). You can leave your vehicle at the Voyageur Lodge for the trip duration.
  • Day 1: At 9:00 a.m., we meet at Voyageurs' Lodge on Batchawana Bay to spend the morning with a course on sea kayaking, including paddling strokes, equipment, safety, and rescues. We finish before noon, load the van and depart for Gargantua Harbour (2 hour drive) where we will have lunch and pack the kayaks. We kayak from Gargantua Harbour to our Warp Bay campsite on a long beach in a deep bay at the mouth of the Gargantua River (5 km, 3 miles).

  • Day 2: Warp Bay to Devil's Chair and on to Redrock River (17 km/10 miles). This is one of the most spectacular sections of Lake Superior Provincial Park, with many black lava. The area is home of many wildlife species, including woodland caribou and moose. We set up camp at one of the largest and most isolated beaches in the park. and explore the area by kayak as time permits

  • Day 3: Paddle south past Ryan point to Chalifant Cove (10 km/ 6 miles). Many cliffs and rocky headlands along the way. Chalifant Cove, the most sheltered area in the park, is a choice camp site.

  • Day 4: Rest and Relaxation; we stay an extra night at Chalifant Cove to explore the Islands and Coves in the area

  • Day 5: Chalifant Cove to Gargantua Harbour (12 km/7 miles). We will paddle by the steep cliff face of Devil's Warehouse Island, by deep faulted rock, and unique red lava. We takeout at Gargantua Harbour at 2:00 p.m. where you will be transported back to Voyageurs' Lodge by 4:30 p.m., to end our adventure vacation in northern Ontario.
