Created by the explosive impact of a huge meteorite over a billion years age, these Provincial Park islands on Lake Superior, Ontario, Canada offer a paddlers paradise of clear, protected waters. Lighthouses, fascinating geology and woodland caribou sightings are guaranteed!
We take a tug boat shuttle to the Slate Islands and we will be paddling throughout the inter islands' waterways and around the perimeters of the major islands with a side trip to the Leadman Islands. From your kayak, the ice and water washed shoreline presents a visual smorgasbord of geological features associated with meteor impact.
For example, we will be able to locate shattercones - cone like rock fractures created by the shock waves, which reverberated following the asteroid's million megaton TNT impact blast. We also visit abandoned gold and copper shafts.
The Slate Islands are home to the largest known herd of woodland caribou. There are now approximately 400 caribou on the islands (approx. 13 caribou/sq km) and the likelihood of spotting one of these beautiful animals on this trip is almost guaranteed. The Slates are also home to arctic plant species usually found 1,600 km north or in a sub-alpine environment.
You guide(s) have advanced wilderness first aid, sea kayak paddling and sea kayak guide course certifications. Safety is their primary concern. They know and love Lake Superior and want to share their knowledge with you. They are wonderful wilderness chefs and "on trip" meals are healthy, fresh and delicious (no freeze dried stuff here!)
