Description:
This early fall trip is to one of our favourite paddling areas – the south side of Philip Edward Island with the Killarney hills as a backdrop. This was one of our first paddling destinations long before Killarney became famous for sea kayaking. A great time to be out there – the water is warm and the summer visitors have gone home. We’ll meet at the White Squall Paddling Centre on the first morning for introductions and orientation. Then we’ll drive North to Killarney – access point for our trip. You can leave your vehicle at White Squall. Once there, we’ll load up our boats and have lunch.
The next few days will be spent exploring the south side of Philip Edward Island with the Killarney hills as a backdrop. This was one of our first paddling destinations long before Killarney became famous for sea kayaking. The stunning white quartzite gives way to pink granite as we traverse a geological transition zone and some of the oldest rocks on earth. The water is crystal clear and the swimming is world class. We’ll base camp for the four days to allow day explorations of the myriad islands, inlets and channels. Be prepared to put in full days of paddling. Out there, you feel like you’re on an ocean – yet the paddling is protected and offers much to explore. We will try to camp early each day so that you can enjoy lots of time for relaxing and swimming. (It’s the best freshwater swimming in the world!) For those who want to work on paddling or rescue skills, the guides will be happy to go paddling with you once camp is set up.
The last day we'll paddle back to Killarney having a final lunch enroute, arriving back at White Squall in the late afternoon; tired, happy, and ready for a good night’s sleep! As with all trips, we’re at the mercy of mother nature, so don’t be surprised if plans change a bit.
