Paddling Ontario Alliance offers hiking, biking and photography packages for fabulous fall colours
Toronto, ON, Toronto, 2005. Autumn is Ontario's time to shine with fabulous fall colours. The Paddling Ontario Alliance, a collection of 24 tourism operators who offer outfitting, accommodation and canoe and kayaking adventures, have added Hiking, Biking and Photography opportunities for experiencing Mother Nature's best show.
Hike the Agawa Canyon with Naturally Superior Adventures. This trip begins by rail in Sault Ste. Marie, and it's designed for people in moderate physical condition. 'We stop the scenic rail ride just above the Agawa Falls and participants hike down the Agawa Valley', says Dave Wells of Northern Superior Adventures. 'Part of the valley faces south, so it's full of colour because of the warmth of southern exposure. The other side is more of a boreal forest, so you have a beautiful interchange between the greens of the coniferous forest and the reds and yellows, the white of the birch trees'. The group camps overnight, then finishes with a 13 km moderately demanding hike. The 'all-inclusive' cost is $296. Available Oct 1, 8 and 15.
Killarney Mountain Lodge on the north shore of Georgian Bay, offers guests the opportunity to exercise their creativity with international photographer Rob Stimpson. The Fall Equinox - Photograph the Changing Seasons package is a three- day workshop, based at Killarney Mountain Lodge, near Killarney Provincial Park. This in an area that A. Y. Jackson and other members of the Group lobbied the government to protect. Participants explore Killarney Village and the park on early morning and late afternoon shooting expeditions, as Stimpson helps them learn by experience, and experiment with new techniques. September 15 to 18, $650 per person (Single occupancy add $170).
The Madawaska Kanu Centre, near Barry's Bay, southeast of Algonquin Provincial Park, best known for canoe and kayaking courses, is offering a fall cycling weekend. 'It's for people who have been up in the summer and want to come back up and see the fall colours', says Dan Kirvan, Guide Manager. It's a tough end of season tour in the spectacular Madawaska Valley, with members of the Ottawa Bicycle Club and Toronto Bike Network. Participants can choose routes of 60, 100 or 130 kilometres a day. There are also trails for mountain bikers near the property. The $210 inclusive price includes accommodation, eight meals, maps and route instructions.
Canadian Wilderness Trips combines scenic hikes with two nights at its rustic base camp at the northwest border of Algonquin Park, plus a day of canoeing and one night camping. The cost is $395. Sept 22 to 25 and Sept 29 to Oct 2.
