The Comfortable side of Adventure travel
Lodge-based trips offered by members of the Paddling Ontario Alliance
Adventure travel can come with the comforts of home-cooked meals, hot showers and warm comfy beds. Many of the 20 adventure tour operators of the Paddling Ontario Alliance (POA) offer lodge-based vacations, with accommodation ranging from bed and breakfasts to solar-powered eco-lodges. Whether you want a family holiday or a romantic get-away, the POA members can make exploring Ontario's waterways and wilderness an easy, safe and comfortable experience.
Explore the Kawartha Lakes region, just over an hour north of Toronto, on a four-night Inn to Inn Kawartha Kayaking soft adventure. This trip has been honored as A-List by National Geographic Traveler Magazine. You are guided (in canoes or kayaks) the first day, then you continue on your own. Even spa treatments are available. Enjoy the pristine lakes and wildlife viewing along the northwest border of Algonquin Park by stationing yourself at Voyageur Quest's rustic Algonquin Log Cabin Lodge on Surprise Lake (six double rooms, maximum 12 guests), or in a two-bedroom solar-powered suite at the Cottage Outpost on Kawawaymog (Round Lake). Come as a couple, book the whole lodge for a group of friends or plan a family reunion, and enjoy delicious meals and guided canoe and hiking excursions. The scenery around Killarney Mountain Lodge is so spectacular that members of the famed Group of Seven helped convince the Ontario Government to protect the area as a provincial park. Book yourself at this wilderness resort and you can paddle in the park on a guided canoe trip, or spend the day sea kayaking and enjoying a gourmet lunch on Georgian Bay. Smoothwater Outfitters & Ecolodge of Temagami has a main lodge plus five private rooms decorated with rustic twig furniture, antiques and original art. Guests paddle a region known for its towering ancient pine forests. Combine your outdoor adventures with yoga, painting & photography workshops or learning about wild edibles, and enjoy regional organic cuisine. Naturally Superior Adventures has its Rock Island Lodge on Lake Superior, near Wawa, Ontario. With only five guest rooms, a fireplace, kitchen and a spectacular view of the world's largest freshwater lake, it's an intimate setting that can be your headquarters for canoe and kayaking instruction, day trips, retreats and workshops. Wabakimi Wilderness Adventures offers guided and unguided trips from its drive-to Eco-lodge, 250 km north of Thunder Bay, home of the elusive woodland caribou. This is the world's largest wilderness paddling area - over five million acres.
